Bass Sounds: Music for Unaccompanied Cello from the Early Baroque
6th Degree Concert Series at St. Clement’s
St. Clement’s Eucharistic Shrine
1105 Boylston Street, Boston, MA
In this unique concert, Emily explores lesser-known repertoire for the unaccompanied cello. Musicians and classical music fans alike are familiar with the Cello Suites of J.S. Bach; this program examines the predecessors to these famous pieces. Ricercars by Antonii and Gabrielli showcase the cello as a true bass line voice—many of them don’t expand beyond the tenor range and make good use of the low register. The music is dark, mysterious, and peculiar at times, but never fails to convey a time period of rich musical expression. J.S. Bach’s first Cello Suite will close the program. General Admission; $15 online or $30 at the door.

Dragonetti Diaries: Inside the Mind of a Prodigy
Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra
The Memorial Church, Harvard Yard
Cambridge, MA
This concert reconstructs the world of bassist Domenico Carlo Maria Dragonetti, a Venetian virtuoso who managed to cross paths, over his long career, with everyone who was anyone. His Bass Concerto headlines the program, along with a grab bag of many of his favorites and friends—a Vivaldi double flute concerto, a Corelli concerto grosso, a Bach chorale, a Beethoven dance, a Mendelssohn prelude and fugue, and Mozart’s miraculously terrible “Musical Joke.” Bassist Douglas Balliett returns to Harvard for a pyrotechnic tour de force: fistfuls of small notes on a very large instrument! $10 General Admission, $5 students/seniors. RSVP on Facebook.
